McNally 1883 Antique Railroad Map of Kentucky & Tennessee

McNally 1883 Antique Railroad Map of Kentucky & Tennessee Reviews

The United States in the 1880s was a nation on the brink of greatness. Almost two decades had passed since the Civil war threatened to tear the young nation apart. Now, united from north to south and from east to west (by a rapidly growing network of railroads), the U.S. was becoming a wealthy and powerful nation. This fascinating authentic antique map is an early work of the Rand McNally firm in Chicago, pioneers of the cerographic (wax-engraving) process, that allowed for the inexpensive printing of full-color maps. Originally a publisher of maps and timetables for the burgeoning railroad industry, Rand McNally's early maps focused on the expanding web of rail lines that linked nearly every corner of the nation. The various railroads, roads, counties, cites, towns, and geographic features are detailed on this relatively large map. If you are looking for an unusual piece of art, to decorate a home or office, these truly "limited-edition" (as it was made more than a century ago) prints are perfect. Antique maps, engravings, & prints are extraordinary examples of the 19th Century printing and engraving arts. As conversation pieces they are unequaled. A beautiful old map, print, or engraving is an actual snapshot of our history. Any of these, increasingly rare, works of art are also some of the most thoughtful (and personal) gifts you can give. As European colonialism was reaching its pinnacle, several European nations were frantically vying for control of many parts of Africa and Asia. In the United States, labor unrest dominated the headlines. Much of workers anger was focused on Chinese immigrants. Many were killed by angry mobs in the Western U.S This map was made in 1888 by Rand McNally in Chicago. It was printed in color using the firm's revolutionary wax-engraving process. McNally 1895 Antique Map of Louisiana

McNally 1895 Antique Map of Louisiana Reviews

Other Picture

The final years of the 19th Century marked the end of America’s westward expansion. The Wild West had not yet been completely tamed, but it was well on its way. Trains and banks were still being robbed, but the bandits were coming under increasing pressure from organized law enforcement. The West was quickly becoming as "civilized" as the East. This over 100 year old work was made using the wax-engraving map printing process pioneered by Rand McNally. This process created high-quality, low-cost maps and made the company the leading creator of maps in the United States (a position they enjoy to this day). This map shows the state’s major geographic features, counties, towns, cities, and railroads. If you are looking for an unusual piece of art, to decorate a home or office, these truly "limited-edition" prints are perfect. McNally 1890 Antique Map of North Dakota

McNally 1890 Antique Map of North Dakota Reviews

Other Picture

In 1889, the Dakota Territory was split in two and admitted to the Union as the states of North and South Dakota (this map would have been one of the first to show the new states separately). Later in 1889 and 1890, Montana, Washington, Idaho, and Wyoming were also admitted to the Union. The country was maturing economically, as huge businesses began to dominate various industries. In an attempt to limit these powerful conglomerates (known as trusts), various states passed antitrust laws. This activity culminated in congressional passage the Sherman Antitrust Act (still used today to limit anti competitive behavior). The final U.S. military action against Native Americans occurred on December 29, 1890. Early that morning, the Seventh Cavalry massacred 200-300 Sioux men, women and children encamped on the banks of Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota. This 110 year old work was made using the wax-engraving map printing process pioneered by Rand McNally. This process created high-quality, low-cost maps and made the company the leading creator of maps in the United States (a position they enjoy to this day).
